What Is the Best Way to Learn Pickleball in Gastonia?
Charenz Tabieros · Pickleball coach in Gastonia, North Carolina
The best way to learn pickleball is a simple blend: get the fundamentals right, practice them with purpose, and play games where you can apply what you learned. I am Charenz Tabieros, a pickleball coach in Gastonia, and I teach students to improve fast by combining focused drills, clear feedback, and game-like reps at T Jeffers Pickleball Courts.
What Is the Best Way to Learn Pickleball if You Are New in Gastonia?
If you are just getting started, your first wins come from a strong grip, clean contact, and reliable footwork. Master a dependable serve and return, then learn how to get to the Non-Volley Zone with balance. Add soft-touch skills like dinks and third-shot drops so you can keep points alive. Finish with simple patterns that help you make decisions under pressure. When you stack these steps, you avoid random trial and error and start seeing progress every week.
I coach in Gastonia at T Jeffers Pickleball Courts, and the environment there is perfect for new and improving players. We can set up drills on one side of the court, then jump into live play with clear goals. I provide training equipment like balls and cones. Bring your own paddle and a water bottle.
Start With Smart Fundamentals, Not Just Reps
Repetition helps only if you are repeating the right movement. In your first few sessions, I focus on:
- Grip and contact point: A clean, consistent contact near your body line prevents pop-ups and mishits.
- Ready position and footwork: Small steps set you up for clean swings and safer movement at the kitchen.
- Serve, return, and transition: Get the ball in, get to the line, and set up the next shot.
- Soft control: Dinks and drops stop bangers from rushing you and open up easy put-aways.
Students often tell me they finally understand the why behind each shot. Juliet wrote, Everything he teaches has a purpose, and I have seen a noticeable difference in my confidence, consistency, and overall game.
What Should a First Month of Pickleball Practice Look Like?
A simple plan for your first 4 weeks:
Week 1: Serve, return, and contact. Aim 8 out of 10 serves in. Work returns deep and crosscourt. Add a split step as your opponent hits.
Week 2: Non-Volley Zone footwork and dinks. Practice holding your ground at the kitchen and meeting the ball out in front. Learn to dink crosscourt first, then straight ahead.
Week 3: Third-shot drop and drive. You will not master both immediately, but you can learn when each one is best. Work a soft arc that lands in the kitchen, then a balanced drive to the opponent’s backhand.
Week 4: Volleys, resets, and simple patterns. Practice a calm block volley and a lift reset from midcourt. Run a pattern like serve deep, return deep, drop to the kitchen, then dink patiently until you get a ball you can finish.
Two 60-minute lessons during this month, spaced 7-10 days apart, tend to speed up results. Between lessons, spend at least one practice session and one open play session applying the focus of the week.
